Learning objectives
By the end of this exercise, you will be able to:
- Apply alt text generation to an image in a draft post
- Apply at least three writing assistance tools (title, excerpt, and content summarization) to a single draft
- Evaluate each AI-generated output and decide whether to keep, edit, or discard it
Before you begin
This exercise requires a local development environment or live site with a connected AI provider. Every feature here needs a live connection, so complete Practical: Connect an AI provider first if you have not already.
💡 Why this matters for you: Every tool in this exercise generates its output from existing content. Title generation, excerpt generation, and content summarization all need a draft to read before they can produce anything, so you’ll write a short draft first and then run the tools on it.
Writing a starting draft
Create a new post and write two to three short paragraphs on any topic you like: a hobby, a recipe, a project update, anything you can write quickly. This draft is what the writing assistance tools in this exercise will read from, so it needs to have real content before you continue.

Generating alt text
Upload an image to your draft post and generate its alt text. Read the result closely: does it describe what is actually in the image, or does it feel generic? Edit it if needed before moving on.

Drafting with writing assistance
Enable Title Generation, Excerpt Generation, and Content Summarization from Settings > AI. With your draft’s paragraphs already written, generate a title, an excerpt, and an inline content summary from it.
For each of the four outputs, decide:
- Keep as-is
- Edit
- Discard, and note why
💡 Why this matters for you: These tools save time, but only if you stay in the editor’s seat. Practicing the keep, edit, or discard decision now builds the judgment you will rely on every time you use AI-assisted writing tools.
What you’ll have when you’re done: a draft post with AI-assisted title, excerpt, and alt text, plus a short note on what you changed and why.
✅ Check your understanding
- Which of the four AI-generated outputs needed the most editing, and what made it fall short?
- How did generating a summary change (or not change) how you’d describe your own draft?
