WordPress Credits Designer Track

WordPress Credits is a contribution-based program supported by the WordPress Foundation that brings students into the heart of the WordPress open source project.

Please note that the “WordPress Credits” course is not an open-access program. It is a specialized initiative designed for educational institutions.

What is the WP Credits Program?

The WP Credits Program is an innovative global project that partners with universities to integrate WordPress into their curriculum. The program provides professors and students with the resources, training, and official recognition to work on real-world WordPress projects for non-profits, contributing to their digital presence while gaining valuable, accredited experience. It’s a unique blend of academic learning and contributing back to the open-source ecosystem.

How to Participate

If you are a student or professor interested in bringing the WP Credits program to your university, or if your institution is already considering it, participation requires a formal application.

Access to this course and the broader program is granted only to approved partner universities. To express interest and begin the application process, the relevant faculty or administrative staff from your university must complete the official interest form.

Before you can contribute to WordPress, you need to know how the community works, where to find your people, and how to show up well. This module gets you set up: a WordPress.org profile, access to Slack, a shared understanding of how decisions get made in this open source project, and a first look at the design tools you’ll be using throughout the program.You’ll also build your own WordPress site. This becomes your portfolio, your testing ground for design experiments, and the place where you’ll document your progress for the rest of the course.By the end of this module, you’ll be oriented in the WordPress community and have a personal site ready to build on. From here, you’ll move into the Project module, where you apply what you’ve learned toward a real contribution to the WordPress Design team.

The Project module is where WP Credits Designer track students move from getting set up to doing real design contribution work. Building on the WordPress fundamentals from Onboarding, this module introduces how the WordPress Design team works, the tools they use, and the different paths students can take to contribute, then gives students hands-on practice through a progression of Practical lessons before choosing and beginning their own contribution project.This module connects the design skills students bring (or are building) to the specific ways WordPress needs design contributions today: Figma and the Design Library, block patterns, the Photo Directory, theme reviews, workshop and meetup materials, and Gutenberg design feedback.

Wrap-up is where you close out your WP Credits journey. You’ll write and deliver a report on the contribution work you’ve done, receive your certificate, and give feedback that helps shape the program for future cohorts.This module is short by design. The real work happened in Onboarding, where you set up your portfolio and got oriented in the WordPress community, and in Project, where you built design skills and made real contributions to the WordPress Design and Test teams. Wrap-up is where you step back, reflect on that work, and formally close the loop.
