In this hands-on activity, participants will use the WordPress Playground environment with WooCommerce pre-loaded to build a functional online storefront from scratch. Without requiring any prior WordPress or WooCommerce experience, attendees will learn how to navigate the core configuration setup wizard, establish baseline store settings, and publish a physical product complete with a title, description, inventory parameters, and an image. Finally, participants will switch to a customer perspective to conduct a full test workflow by navigating the live shop page, adding items to the cart, and completing a mock checkout transaction.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify Core Components: Recognize and explain the role of the four primary operational mechanisms of a WooCommerce store, specifically products, the shopping cart, the block-based checkout, and order dashboards.
  • Configure Storefront Settings: Establish essential localization parameters, including location, currency, and product industry type, by executing the multi-screen WooCommerce onboarding wizard.
  • Publish Simple Products: Author and publish a live product directly within the editor by configuring a detailed title, short and main descriptions, a specific regular price, active inventory stock quantities, and descriptive image alt text.
  • Evaluate Platform Capabilities: Assess the out-of-the-box native features provided by WooCommerce versus the advanced requirements that demand external plugins or technical configurations for a live deployment, such as live carrier shipping integrations, SSL certificates, transactional email delivery, and automated payment gateways.
  • Compare eCommerce Frameworks: Contrast the functionality of a full WooCommerce instance against alternative lightweight options like Easy Digital Downloads, WP Simple Pay, or SureCart based on the specific architectural needs of the product type being sold.
  • Execute Transaction Workflows: Validate the end-to-end customer purchasing lifecycle by performing a front-end structural test encompassing shop page navigation, item accumulation within the cart block, shipping address input, and backend order status verification.
