Transcript

Introduction

In this lesson, we’ll explore how to find, activate and customize a block theme that meets your design needs. Block themes represent the future of WordPress design. They are built entirely with blocks, offering incredible flexibility and customization options. Block themes let you visually edit every part of your site, from headers to footers and everything in between.

Finding, selecting and activating a block theme

To find the block theme, go to the WordPress.org website, click on “Extend” and then select “Themes”. Then you can click on “Block Themes” to only view block themes that’s available in the Directory. When choosing a block theme, consider when it was last updated, how many active installations it has and if it is compatible with the latest version of WordPress. It might also be helpful to look at the ratings and the support the theme offers. You can also access a block theme via the Dashboard. Make your way to Appearance, click on “Themes”, select “Add new theme” and then you can narrow down your search by selecting “Block Themes” or the “Feature Filter.” Remember, with block themes you’re not locked into the initial design. You’re choosing a starting point that you can freely customize. You could also start with a default WordPress theme and mould it into a theme of your desire. Once you find the right theme, you can click on “Install” and then “Activate.”

Customizing your theme

Then we can make our way to Appearance and open up the Site Editor. This is where we can customize every aspect of our site. We can edit templates, create new layouts and adjust Global Styles. When searching for block theme, you can choose a theme that’s close to what you hope to achieve. This approach can save you time and effort. For example, if you are building a portfolio, start with a portfolio-focused block theme. For a business site, look for themes with robust homepage layouts and patterns. From there, you can adjust colors and typography to match your brand, modify layouts to fit your content and add or remove sections as needed. As mentioned, you even have the option to select a minimalist design, such as a default theme, to use as a base from which to work from. Happy designing and enjoy the flexibility of WordPress block themes.
