Exploring WordPress 6.7

Intrdoduction

Let’s explore some of the new features that have been introduced with WordPress 6.7 such as the new Twenty Twenty-five default theme, the innovative zoom out view, the ability to overwrite font presets and improvements made to the query loop block to only name a few. So let’s jump straight in.

Twenty Twenty-Five

First up is the new default Twenty Twenty-five theme that provides you with a large amount of style variations as well as an extensive pattern library. When you create a new page you can select one of the numerous starter patterns or page patterns to use as a base to work from. To turn this setting off click on the three vertical dots top right select preferences and then select or deselect the option to show starter patterns. Whether you’re running a portfolio site, a photo blog or a news site, this theme offers the flexibility you need. It features a variety of blocks and layouts to help you create a site tailored to your content.

Zoom-out view

The first and my favorite new feature that I’ve landed with 6.7 is the innovative zoom out view. This feature simplifies site building by allowing you to compose at the pattern level instead of focusing on individual blocks. When you select a pattern and click on the plus icon you will be able to insert available patterns in one click. When you insert a pattern you can use the block tool bar to move the block to a new position or to make a copy to duplicate it or to delete the pattern. Another update is that the option to shuffle between patterns is only available in the zoom out view. This feature allows you to quickly change and find a different pattern. As part of making zoom out more robust you will still see options to style top level container blocks and any individual blocks that don’t exist within a container. As you will notice with the Twenty Twenty-five theme you can apply the style variations to your patterns.

Background images

WordPress 6.7 also expands background image support. Now you can customize content blocks such as quotes and verses with background images adding more design flexibility across your site. This enhancement eliminates the need for nesting blocks making it easier to achieve the desired look by adding a background image to individual blocks.

Query Loop block

The query loop block has also received some significant improvements. It now automatically inherits the query from your template so you can see your posts immediately without extra configuration. Plus the new toggle options allow you to easily switch between default and custom queries making it easier for both beginners and advanced users to manage their content. You will also notice that some commonly used settings like posts per page have been moved from the tool bar to the sidebar settings panel. Another new addition is to filter your query loop by post format. So when you select formats you can filter your query by selecting the relevant post format. Furthermore when adding a query loop block to a single post or page the settings will automatically be configured to work in that context.

Font management updates

Next let’s discuss some of the font management updates. Firstly you can now customize your theme’s font size presets. When we make our way to typography and select text we will see predefined font sizes labeled small to XXL. And this is of course also the case for other areas in the block editor and for example if you want to update the size of your heating levels. These predefined font sizes can be customized with specific properties. So when we return to typography we can scroll down right to the bottom and select font size presets. You can now adjust any of these or add a custom preset and you’ll also find a new feature fluid typography that will make the font size scale dynamically. By setting a maximum and minimum font size the font will automatically scale on smaller screens without needing additional tweaks. Secondly fonts are also now grouped by source for example theme or custom helping users understand add a glance where each font comes from.

Typography and color presents

Next when you browse styles you will notice that typography and color presets have been added and the cool thing is you can select these independently of each other. Another great feature is that when you select your header or footer template part and open the sidebar settings you will be able to replace or swap that header or footer template part with one of the available patterns in one click.

Data views

And lastly data views have been refined the aim is to make these views more flexible for customization and more functional to use. You can choose your preferred layout namely table grid or list. When you select the table layout for example and click on options you will have filtering options and you will also be able to hide properties, unhide them or shift them to a new position. And when you select the grid layout and click on options you’ll be able to preview the size, decide how many items you want per page and also click on the eye to hide or unhide properties. Enjoy exploring these key updates as well as many other enhancements.
