Hi and welcome to Learn WordPress. In today’s tutorial, we are going to look at how to add media and Openverse images to your content directly from the Inserter. Visual content is very important for any site as it grabs attention and helps you get your message across faster than any other type of content on the web.
WordPress has made it even easier for folks by enabling users to add media via the Inserter as well as images from Openverse that are free to use on your site. The Openverse inserter integration only includes CC0, also known as Creative Commons Zero licenced works, which means they do not require attribution, and the inserted captions can safely be removed. In short, anyone can use, modify and distribute these images for any purpose without asking for permission or giving credit to the creator.
To add an image or video from your Media Library, click on the Inserter top left. Make your way to Media next to Patterns and select Images and here you will see a preview of all your images. And once you’re ready, select the image you’re after and it will insert into your page or post automatically.
We will follow the same process to add an image from Openverse. Click on the Inserter, make your way to media, and this time, select Openverse. And here, you will also see a preview of all the images for a search result. So let’s go ahead and type in Laugh, for example, and select the image you want. In the block toolbar, you will be able to change the alignment and there’s also an option to remove the caption in one click because, as mentioned, you don’t have to provide attribution for these images.
Next, you also have a choice to add text over the image and when you select this option, the image will be added to a Cover block. We will see this when we open up our List View. Now we can add text over the image and then also edit the Cover block as needed. You even have the option to add a duotone filter if you wish to.
Please note when you add an image from the Openverse integration, the image will automatically be added to your Media Library. To explore more images from Openverse, go to wordpress.org, hover over Download, extend, and select Openverse. And here it says, Explore more than 600 million creative works. I will change the content only to see images and then, for example, search for photos of elephants. And now, on the right-hand side, you will find a variety of filters that you can use to search for what you’re looking for.
I hope you enjoy using this new feature, and visit Learn WordPress for more tutorials and training material.
