WordPress Credits is a contribution-based program supported by the WordPress Foundation
that brings students into the heart of the WordPress open source project.

Please note that the “WordPress Credits” course is not an open-access program. It
is a specialized initiative designed for educational institutions.

## What is the WordPress Credits Program?

WP Credits is a global program that partners with schools and universities to build
WordPress contribution into their curriculum. Students work on real contributions
to the WordPress open source project, supported by sponsored mentors, hosting, and
premium tools, and earn academic credit for it. Professors get a structured program
with a defined path, ready-made materials, and official recognition from the WordPress
Foundation.

It’s a blend of academic learning and contributing back to the open source ecosystem:
students graduate with public, verifiable work in their WordPress.org profile.

## How to Participate

WP Credits is open only to approved partner institutions. Access to this course
comes through your institution, not through individual signup.

To start the process, faculty or administrative staff at your university complete
the [official interest form](https://airtable.com/appIzQKfwTn5dyPVp/shrYvY0CDNIkILIre).
We review each submission and follow up to discuss how the program would fit your
curriculum, timeline, and student cohort.

If you’re a student and your university isn’t yet a partner, the most useful thing
you can do is share this page with a professor or department head who might champion
it. Programs often start with one interested faculty member.

In the meantime, anyone can start contributing to WordPress today through [Make WordPress](https://make.wordpress.org/).

### What You’ll Learn in this Course

The course runs across three modules and takes you from newcomer to credited contributor.

You’ll learn how the WordPress open source project actually works: how decisions
get made, how teams communicate, and how to show up well in a global community.
You’ll set up your WordPress.org profile, join Slack, and build your own WordPress
site to use as a portfolio and testing ground.

From there, you’ll move into real contribution work. You’ll explore the contributor
teams, choose a project that matches your skills, and make a contribution that ships
to the wider WordPress ecosystem. Along the way you’ll join team meetings, take
part in a WordPress event, and reflect on your progress at each stage.

You’ll finish by presenting a wrap-up report on your work and receiving your certificate.

### Your Support Network

You are never contributing alone. More than 90 mentors are available across the
program, team admins run the course and are there when you need direction. Hundreds
of peers and alumni have been through the same modules.

Ask questions early and often. That is how contribution works here.

## 󠀁[Onboarding](https://learn.wordpress.org/modules/onboarding/?course_id=404493)󠁿

Before you can contribute to WordPress, you need to know how the community works,
where to find your people, and how to show up well. This module gets you set up:
a WordPress.org profile, access to Slack, a shared understanding of how decisions
get made in this open source project, and a first look at the language and translation
tools you’ll be using throughout the program. You’ll also build your own WordPress
site. This becomes your personal website, your testing ground, and the place where
you’ll document your progress for the rest of the course. By the end of this module,
you’ll be oriented in the WordPress community and have a personal site ready to
build on. From here, you’ll move into the Project module, where you apply what you’ve
learned toward a real contribution to the WordPress Polyglots team.

## 󠀁[Project](https://learn.wordpress.org/modules/project/?course_id=404493)󠁿

The Project module is where WP Credits Translation Track students move from getting
set up to doing real translation contribution work. Building on the WordPress fundamentals
from Onboarding, this module introduces how the WordPress Polyglots team works,
the tools they use, and the different paths students can take to contribute, then
gives students hands-on practice through a progression of Practical lessons before
choosing and beginning their own contribution project. This module connects the language
skills students bring to the specific ways WordPress needs translation contributions
today: translate.wordpress.org and GlotPress, locale team glossaries and style guides,
software string translation for WordPress core, themes, and plugins, and Learn WordPress
lesson translation through the Training Team.

## 󠀁[Wrap-up](https://learn.wordpress.org/modules/wrap-up/?course_id=404493)󠁿

Wrap-up is where you close out your WP Credits journey. You’ll write and deliver
a report on the contribution work you’ve done, receive your certificate, and give
feedback that helps shape the program for future cohorts. This module is short by
design. The real work happened in Onboarding, where you set up your website and
got oriented in the WordPress community, and in Project, where you built translation
skills and made real contributions to the WordPress Polyglots team and your locale
team. Wrap-up is where you step back, reflect on that work, and formally close the
loop.
